Sacramento neighborhood plagued by smashed car windows

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Piles of glass and broken car windows along La Riviera Drive on Friday were hard to miss by residents and people traveling through the College/Glen neighborhood of Sacramento.

Adam Smith lives nearby where those smash-ins happened. He described seeing glass all over the sidewalk. He also said his car was luckily not smashed.

At least a dozen cars had smashed windows overnight. Some neighbors said this kind of vandalism has become a recurring problem in recent months. Jesse Lopez said his car was targeted in prior incidents, and while it was spared this time, he wonders if more could be done to deter these crimes.

“If it’s ongoing all the time, you would think that you would have someone sitting here, seeing if you can catch doing it. I don’t know,” Smith said. “It’s a beautiful neighborhood, but it gets very frustrating.”

A police report about the vandalism discovered Friday was reported by a neighbor to police. He told KCRA 3 that a repair on his broken window cost just under $200.

A spokesperson for the department said the report was still being processed. In the meantime, police urged residents to park in well-lit areas, lock all doors, consider installing an extra alarm and never leave anything of value inside.
